Zorg van wieg tot graf. Met twee ziekenhuizen, vele huisartspraktijken en medische instellingen was de Bergweg dé zorgboulevard van Rotterdam. Frisse Bergweglucht maakt gezond! Patiënten van ziekenhuis Eudokia werden op mooie dagen met bed en al naar buiten gereden. In 1991 verdween het Eudokia én het Bergwegziekenhuis. Toch kun je de circle of life op de Bergweg nog steeds rond maken: Je vindt er een verloskundig centrum en CVU Uitvaartzorg.

Diny Schambergen (71) werkte in de jaren tachtig in het Bergwegziekenhuis. Zij zag de monumentale panden van de Bergweg in zekere zin als een façade. In haar rol als maatschappelijk werker werd ze geconfronteerd met het menselijke leed dat er vlak achter lag.

Op deze luchtfoto uit 1927 zie je ziekenhuis Eudokia tussen het spoorwegviaduct en de Bergsingel. Het complex zou in de loop der jaren nog groter worden. De Bergweg loopt op de foto van linksonder naar rechtsboven. Op de hoek met de Bergsingel was het Radiotherapeutisch Instituut gevestigd. In dit centrum, later bekend als Daniel den Hoed-kliniek, werd gepionierd met bestraling als kankerbehandeling. Waar de bomen staan, bij het viaduct, was het terrein van verhuizer Schut. Hier ‘overwinterden’ soms ook circussen (er zijn hier ook skeletten van begraven circusdieren gevonden…)

Een waterkoude dag op de Bergweg, de straatkeitjes glimmen van de regen. Rechts het hoofdgebouw van ziekenhuis Eudokia. Hier is tegenwoordig het Eudokiaplein met winkelcentrum, kantoren en woningen. Op de foto kijken we in de richting van de Schiekade – de boog is onderdeel van het viaduct van de Hofpleinlijn, waarover in 1908 de eerste elektrische treinen van Nederland reden. Vanaf station Bergweg reisde je rechtstreeks naar Den Haag of naar Scheveningen.

De Bergweg, de eeuwenoude landweg naar Hillegersberg, transformeerde rond 1900 in een stadsstraat. Deze foto dateert uit die tijd. De bomen doen denken aan een polderweggetje, maar intussen groeit Rotterdam uit z’n voegen. De Bergweg wordt de centrale verkeers-as van Rotterdam-Noord. Links ziekenhuis Eudokia, dat in 1890 op deze plek werd geopend, in villa ‘Welbehagen’. Rechts de hoek met de Agniesestraat. De bomen zullen snel worden gekapt…

Ziekenhuis Eudokia (Grieks voor ‘welbehagen’) richtte zich in eerste instantie op ouderen en chronisch zieken. We zouden dat nu geriatrische of palliatieve zorg noemen. Of in minder sjieke woorden: echt beter ging je er niet worden.
Nederland was een verzuild land én een standenmaatschappij. De kwaliteit van de verzorging was afhankelijk van je inkomen, en werd in drie klassen aangeboden. Bovendien had elke geloofsgemeenschap z’n eigen zorgsysteem.

Eudokia was een Gereformeerd ziekenhuis. Er waren ook Katholieke ziekenhuizen (zoals St. Franciscus Gasthuis aan de Schiekade) en openbare ziekenhuizen (zoals het Bergwegziekenhuis verderop in de straat). Op de foto een behandelkamer voor inwendige inspectie. Zou dat er in een Katholiek ziekenhuis anders hebben uitgezien?

Een lentedag in 1982. Uiteindelijk verdween Eudokia in 1991, net als het Bergwegziekenhuis. De twee ziekenhuizen fuseerden, om samen verder te gaan in Capelle a/d IJssel, als het IJssellandziekenhuis.

Het Bergwegziekenhuis lag aan de noordkant van de Bergweg, op de grens van Hillegersberg. Het was als gemeentelijk ziekenhuis niet aan een bepaald geloof verbonden. Met de opening in 1908 werd het de ‘dependance’ van het grote gemeenteziekenhuis aan de Coolsingel. Na de sloop in 1991 kwam hier het seniorencomplex ‘Humanitas Bergweg’.
De afbeelding is van een ansichtkaart; een ingekleurde foto. De paardentram op de voorgrond heeft Hillegersberg als bestemming. Pas in 1923 werden de paarden vervangen door elektrische trams.

Privacy was ver te zoeken, maar de zusters waren toegewijd. In zo’n ziekenzaal lag je met tien man. Of tien vrouw. Maar altijd strikt gescheiden: gemengde ziekenzalen kwamen pas veel later.

Creatieve therapie bestaat al langer dan je denkt. Patiëntjes zijn in de weer met stokken en riet in deze speciale kamer van het Bergwegziekenhuis. De handenarbeid is goed voor fysiek en mentaal herstel. Let ook op de grote lampen rechts, voor lichttherapie.
