Knaken en zaken. Ooit de landweg naar Hillegersberg, werd de Bergweg rond 1900 onderdeel van het moderne Rotterdam. Ondernemers waren de motor van de ontwikkeling. Speculanten stampten woonblokken uit de grond, fabrikanten en winkeliers boden koopwaar en werkgelegenheid. Op de Bergweg 287, de locatie van CVU Uitvaartzorg, werkten vele generaties arbeiders in de wasserij en ververij van J. Hoevels. De bekende fotograaf Bernard Eilers legde het werkproces vast in 1918.

Wim Veenstra (78), stadsgids en oud-winkelier, weet alles over de Bergweg. Hij legt uit hoe het komt dat er geen enkel plan zit in het winkelaanbod van de straat. Ook brengt hij een ode aan een arts die baanbrekend werk heeft verricht. Én hij geeft een kleine geschiedenisles over het ontstaan van de Bergweg. Dat gaat terug tot het jaar 400…

Trudi Cornelis-Schut (73) groeide op aan de Bergweg. Haar meisjesnaam zie je nog weleens op een verhuiswagen voorbijkomen. De geschiedenis daarachter gaat terug tot 1910. Een verhaal over een ondernemende familie, met bijrollen voor leeuwenbotten en een miljoen Belgische vluchtelingen.

Rokende schoorstenen waren het teken van vooruitgang. Met de opkomst van de stoommachine werd Rotterdam een moderne, industriële havenstad. Op deze 19e-eeuwse prent zien we de Bergweg vanaf de Schiekade – de landelijke omgeving wordt opgeslokt door de stad. Op dat moment heet de Bergweg officieel nog Blommersdijkscheweg. Op de voorgrond de Schie, die pas in 1940 gedempt zou worden.

Voor de komst van de auto waren paarden een vast onderdeel van het straatbeeld. Op de foto uit ±1910 de ‘logistieke dienst’ van T. den Hartigh, een van de grootste bakkerijen van de stad. Den Hartigh, gevestigd aan de Bergweg, verkocht deze broodwagen ook in miniatuur, als houten speelgoed.

Brood werd aan huis bezorgd met dit soort bakfietsen en handwagens. Dit is het domein van broodfabrikant T. den Hartigh aan de Bergweg, gezien vanaf de Gordelweg. In Rotterdam-Noord waren opvallend veel bakkersbedrijven. Aan de Bergweg zat ook Van der Meer & Schoep en Beukers & Rijneke. Het grote gebouw rechts op de foto is het Bergwegziekenhuis. Op de plek van de karren vind je nu de Lidl.

Een rokende schoorsteen op de achtergrond: de fabrieken stonden middenin de woonwijk. Links is de hoek met de Bergsingel. Dit pand werd gebouwd als ‘Autogarage Du Nord’, maar werd al snel een café (met dezelfde naam). Het hoogste pand in het rijtje panden aan de Bergweg is chocoladefabriek Beukers & Rijneke, nu Studio de Bakkerij. Links daarvan wasserij Hoevels, nu CVU Uitvaartzorg.

Nog een keer wasserij Hoevels, maar nu in de jaren ’50. Een gedetailleerd kijkje op de werkvloer. Zoom maar ’s in. Vooraan staan de mannen met de grote persmachines, de vrouwen achterin doen het fijnere strijkwerk. Deze fabriekshal grensde aan de Willebrordusstraat.

Op deze stoere vrachtwagen was bakkerij Van der Meer & Schoep heel trots. En terecht. Het pand erachter was ooit een melksalon (‘Aurore’), daarna een houthandel en vervolgens een bouwmarkt. Om de hoek, aan het Willebrordusplein, werd ‘King Corn’ gebakken.

Waren er dan alleen bakkers op de Bergweg? Gelukkig niet. Er waren namelijk ook heel veel slagers. In de tijd dat de slagers nog zelf slachtten, liepen ze eerst met hun koe een rondje door de buurt, bij wijze van reclame. De honden op deze foto wachten op een stukje worst van slager de Bruijn.
