‘Chopin en een goede mars’. De markante muziekpedagoge Nel van Prooijen begeleidde vele generaties Rotterdamse kinderen in hun persoonlijke en culturele ontwikkeling. Vanuit haar woning aan de Bergweg gaf zij piano-, orgel-, zang- en dansles. Kinderen uit het Oude Noorden repeteerden koorzang en toneel in een zaaltje in de Gerard Scholtenstraat. Op de foto zien we dit zaaltje in 1957, met een uitvoering van de operette Goudmuiltje. ‘Tante Nel’ was een inspirerende, betrokken docente. Ze was streng maar liefdevol. En dat zij samenwoonde met tante Toos was destijds ongehoord.

Susan van der Schoor (69) heeft een bijzondere band met de Bergweg, mede dankzij haar pianospelende Tante Nel. Susan werkte lange tijd als hulpverlener, supervisor en HBO-docent.

Vanaf 1920 was Nel van Prooijen actief als muziekpedagoge. Het Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad doet verslag van de uitvoering van de kinder-operette ‘De Tooverring’, waarbij Nel de piano-begeleiding verzorgde. “De kinderen, die meespeelden, hadden er zelf pleizier in en ze zongen als lijstertjes, zoo onbevangen en leuk, dat het een lieve lust was.”

Gezicht op de Bergweg vanaf de Schiekade. Het water van de Schie werd pas in 1940 gedempt, met het puin van de gebombardeerde stad. Nel van Prooijen woonde aan de Bergweg aan de linkerzijde op de foto, nabij de Insulindestraat.

Nog een keer de uitvoering in 1957. De meisjes waren in de meerderheid. Goudmuiltje werd gespeeld door Bep de Kroeff, de rol van prins kwam voor rekening van Ireen Dresje. De foto komt uit de verzameling van Paula Hartman. Zij speelde de rol van Hoofdkabouter – daar was ze heel trots op.

Nel van Prooijen bleef ‘mej.’ – ze zou nooit trouwen. Wel woonde ze enige tijd samen met ‘Tante Toos’. Dat was officieel haar huishoudster.
