Huiskamers voor iedereen. Een kroeg op iedere hoek! Nouja, op bijna iedere hoek dan. Rond 1800 waren er op de Bergweg al ‘ververschingslokalen’ en melksalons. Nog steeds is er op de Bergweg voor elk wat wils: Van bruine kroeg tot steriele wijnbar. Het zijn de epicentra van het sociale leven.

Buurtbewoner Jan Rot brengt een ode aan de geschiedenis van de Bergweg, met een glansrol voor roemruchte café’s. Krijg dat maar ’s uit je hoofd.

Een fotograaf – dat is iets uitzonderlijks. Kinderen drommen samen voor de deur van café Bellevue. Hier – op de hoek met de Noordsingel – was de Bergweg op z’n smalst. Reden voor de gemeente om het pand in 1920 af te breken. Café Bellevue verhuist naar een locatie verderop, op nummer 189. Op de foto zien we links nog voortuintjes. Die zullen ook verdwijnen. Ruim baan voor het stadsverkeer!

Dit werd de tweede locatie van Café Bellevue: De voormalige villa Vinkerust. Toen de Bergweg nog door landerijen werd omgeven, maakte deze weelderige villa deel uit van een buitenplaats. Helaas was ook de tweede versie van Bellevue geen lang leven beschoren. In 1925 werd de villa gesloopt, omdat ook hier de straat werd rechtgetrokken. Bovendien moest er een transformatorhuis komen. Café Bellevue kreeg een nieuwe, definitieve locatie op nr 199. Daar vind je nu café Passion. Het elektriciteitshuisje staat er ook nog. Hier verkoopt Ethel sinds 1987 haar bloemen.

Een huiskamer voor iedereen – daar horen ook viervoetige huisgenoten bij. Villa Vinkerust, de tweede locatie van café Bellevue, was royaal van omvang en had een enorme tuin. Er werden concerten, wedstrijden, veilingen en vergaderingen gehouden. En af en toe ook een hondenshow, zoals blijkt uit deze foto-reportage in het tijdschrift Groot-Rotterdam, van 26 juni 1923.

Melk is goed voor elk – maar het bederft snel. Daarom gingen stedelingen vroeger naar de boer toe. Net buiten de stad vond je boerderijen met melksalons, waar je loeiverse melk kon verorberen. De Bergweg was een landelijk gebied. Bij boer Jan Maat, alias ‘De Bootswoning’, was het goed toeven met een glas melk binnen handbereik. De boerderij verdwenen, maar de melk bleef. Waar boer Jan Maat ooit zat, verkocht melksalon ‘Aurore’ vanaf 1909 gepasteuriseerde zuivel. Het mooie pand staat er nog, op nummer 161. En in de gevel kun je de tegeltableaus ‘Vanouds de Bootswoning’ en ‘Aurore’ ontdekken.

Hoe blijf je overeind op een barkruk? Of is het een vriendschappelijke wurgsessie? Meestal blijven herinneringen aan dit soort escapades binnen de vier muren van een café. Maar de barman van Bierlokaal Schoonewil maakte er een foto van, dus we hebben het er 30 jaar later nog over. Op deze locatie zit nu Brasserie Noord. Andere stijl. De krukken hebben er rugleuninkjes.
