‘Vrouw met een foutje’ – zo omschreef Janine Wegman zichzelf in een contactadvertentie. Het leven van Janine was een performance. Ze groeide op als Rinus aan de Bergweg, waar ze zich ontpopte tot goochelaar, organiste, ‘universeel artieste’ en cultfiguur. Janine vond haar identiteit en werd de bekendste vrouw van Rotterdam. Op deze foto poseert ze met haar orgel voor haar huis op de Bergweg.

Dymph Wegman (75) is de nicht van transgender organiste Janine Wegman (1925-2007). Haar tante was een fenomeen in Rotterdam. Een fenomeen dat zeker in het begin weerstand opriep. Voor Dymph Wegman (75) was Janine haar Oom Rien.

Dezelfde locatie als de eerste foto, maar dan 25 jaar eerder. Janine bloeide op in de jaren ’70. Ze werd een beroemde verschijning in Rotterdam, geliefd onder zowel de culturele elite als ‘de gewone Rotterdammer’. Dankzij de vrijer wordende samenleving kon Rinus écht Janine worden.

Janine groeide op als ‘Rinus Wegman’ in de omgeving van de Bergweg. Al vroeg koesterde ze verlangens om vrouw te zijn, al omschreef ze deze periode als ‘ik was een heel leuk jongetje’. Was het jongetje Rinus Wegman ook getuige van dit verkeersongeval op de kruising van de Bergweg en de Zwart Janstraat?

Orgel spelen was Janine met de paplepel ingegoten. Aan de Bergweg had haar familie een handel in orgels, piano’s en andere instrumenten. De Hammond-orgels werden vanaf de jaren ’50 mateloos populair. Janine was heel technisch, ze repareerde zelf orgels en keyboards als hobby.
