Van cacao tot cultuur. In de fabriek waar miljoenen chocolaatjes van de band af rolden, ging in 2012 Studio de Bakkerij open voor publiek: de culturele huiskamer van Rotterdam-Noord. Dit adres was 80 jaar het domein van Beukers & Rijneke – fabrikanten van chocolade en suikerwerken. Op de stoep poseert het personeel. De mannen staan, de jongens zitten. Het is een plechtig moment. Een jubileum? Er worden sigaren gerookt – dat is feestelijk. De hoeden gaan af voor de foto. De bazen hebben een hoge hoed, het lagere personeel een pet. Iedereen draagt z’n beste kloffie. Zouden ze dat hebben laten stomen bij de buren…?

Marjolein Bakker (41) en Jelte Buiteman (39) zagen tijdens de eerste corona-golf van 2020 een lange wandeltocht plotseling eindigen in Studio De Bakkerij, het theatertje van Marjoleins broer Maarten. Dit tijdelijke logeer-adres gaf hen een nieuwe blik op de Bergweg – en op chocola.

Chocolade en suikerwerken. Vanaf 1894 was Beukers & Rijneke gevestigd op Bergweg 283. Toen ze begonnen, heette de Bergweg overigens nog Blommerdijkscheweg. Deze plaat is de omslag van een prijslijst van Beukers & Rijneke uit 1912. Een paar jaar later zou de gevel worden veranderd en verhoogd. De gevel van het pand op 281 is nog altijd hetzelfde.

Beukers & Rijneke was niet het enige bakkersbedrijf op de Bergweg. Dit is het interieur van Broodbakkerij Den Hartigh, ter hoogte van de Gordelweg. De foto is zo genomen, dat de moderne machines rechts ook goed in beeld komen. Automatisering anno 1920.

“De eerste nachten waren onwennig, maar al gauw was het gewoon. We sliepen tussen de herinneringen aan monologen, bewegingen en decorstukken.
