Onderdrukking en overleven. De Tweede Wereldoorlog op de Bergweg is niet in één beeld te vangen, en eigenlijk ook niet in vijf of in vijftig beelden. Het waren donkere jaren van verwoesting, verdrukking, vervolging, verraad en verzet. Daders van terreur overleefden – zoals Generalleutnant Kurt Student op de foto. Zijn leven werd gered door een chirurg van het Bergwegziekenhuis. Onschuldigen overleefden de oorlog niet, zoals de meeste Joodse bewoners van de Bergweg. Kleine lichtpuntjes hielden de Rotterdammers hoopvol. En gelukkig brak met het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog een periode van vrijheid aan, die tot op heden voortduurt.

Loes Schut (84) maakte als meisje van vier het begin van de oorlog mee. Ze woonde toen met haar ouders en een jonger zusje aan de Vijverhofstraat, net achter de Bergweg, met aan de overzijde het Eudokiaziekenhuis.

Op en rond de Bergweg woonden veel Joodse Rotterdammers. Op de foto zien we Izaak en Emma van Dam met hun kleindochters Eleonore en Louise, in hun sfeervolle huis op Bergweg 99. Het huis had 16 kamers, in het jaar van de foto (1936) woonden er 7 familieleden bij elkaar.
Izaak en Emma waren eigenaar van ‘Maison van Teeffelen’, met drie hoedenzaken in Rotterdam. Ook andere familieleden waren succesvol in de mode-industrie. Emma van Dam overleed vlak voor de oorlog aan kanker. Izaak werd in 1943 vermoord in een nazi-vernietigingskamp, evenals zijn dochter Rosetta, zoon Maurits, schoondochter Rachel en kleindochter Emmy. De kleindochters op de foto overleefden de oorlog op onderduikadressen, evenals hun ouders.

Het NSB-kringhuis Rotterdam-Noord was in de jaren ’30 gevestigd op de hoek van de Bergweg en de Van den Hoonaardstraat, links op deze foto. Later verhuisde de NSB naar een ander pand op de Bergweg. De NSB’ers werden gehaat. Hun locaties waren doelwit van bekladding en vernieling.

Hetzelfde hoekpand met Nationaal-Socialistische propaganda. Mussert wordt als leider aangeprezen, het Marxisme was de vijandelijke ideologie. ‘Volk en Vaderland’ (de ‘VoVa’) was het partijblad van de NSB.

In tijden van oorlog heb je een ‘Ausweis’ nodig om hulp te mogen verlenen. Wim van Eijnsbergen was commandant van de luchtbeschermingsdienst in ziekenhuis Eudokia. Bij een luchtaanval (van de geallieerden op vijandelijke doelen in Rotterdam) had hij de coördinatie van schuilplaatsen en eventuele evacuatie, bluswerk en reddingswerk. Met dit document kon hij Duitse controles passeren. Wim van Eijnsbergen speelde ook een rol bij het verdedigen van de stad in mei 1940.

Generalleutnant Kurt Student dankte zijn leven aan de Bergweg. Student was de hoogste Duitse officier bij de aanval op Rotterdam. In die rol voerde hij de capitulatie-onderhandelingen met de Rotterdamse burgemeester en het Nederlandse militaire gezag. De besprekingen vonden plaats in een huis aan de Statenweg op 14 mei 1940, enkele uren na het verwoestende bombardement. Ondanks het staakt-het-vuren, ontstond op deze locatie plotseling een schermutseling waarbij geschoten werd. Generaal Student raakte hierbij levensgevaarlijk gewond aan zijn hoofd. Met spoed werd hij naar het Bergwegziekenhuis overgebracht, waar hij door een Rotterdamse chirurg werd geopereerd aan zijn schedel en hersenen. Duitse soldaten hielden de chirurg tijdens de operatie onder schot. Generaal Student genas volledig, en was de chirurg en verplegers eeuwig dankbaar. Het personeel van het Bergwegziekenhuis keek met gemengde gevoelens op deze geslaagde operatie terug.

Het grote Duitse bombardement van 14 mei 1940 trof vooral de Binnenstad. Rotterdam-Noord kreeg echter ook een flinke lading bommen mee. Links en rechts van de Bergweg werden huizenblokken verwoest door explosies en de daaropvolgende branden. Hier het blok tussen de Bergstraat en de Benthuizerstraat, dat volledig vernield werd, en nooit herbouwd (hier is nu een plein). Vlakbij raakte een voltreffer de gevangenis aan de Noordsingel. Tientallen gedetineerden ontsnapten, maar konden dankzij hun opvallende gevangeniskleding snel weer worden ingerekend.

Een geïsoleerde bominslag verwoestte op 14 mei ook het pand op de hoek van de Bergweg en de Insulindestraat. Doordat de bommen minder geconcentreerd vielen dan in het centrum, konden in Rotterdam-Noord de branden beter bestreden worden en bleef complete verwoesting uit. Linksachter op de foto zie je de Bergweg. Op de gebombardeerde hoek kwam nieuwbouw, je vind er nu het Surinaamse afhaalrestaurant Asha.

Zelfde locatie, vanaf de Bergweg gezien, met een bizar tafereel. Het bombardement is achter de rug en het is schitterend weer. Tijd voor sensatie! Rotterdammers trekken er massaal op uit om zich te vergapen aan de verwoeste stad en de bezettingsmacht. De rij voertuigen in de Insulindestraat krijgt veel bekijks. Het is een Duitse brandweercolonne, die vlak achter het front is opgetrokken. Er hebben dus Duitse brandweermannen geholpen om de Rotterdamse branden te blussen… Om het nóg gekker te maken: deze brandweer-auto’s waren groen.

Is dit oorlog? Ja! Het is 1942 en we zien de Blommersdijkselaan met de Hildegardiskerk, vanaf de Bergweg. De eerste jaren van de oorlog proberen de Rotterdammers het gewone leven voort te zetten, zo goed en zo kwaad als het kan. Tenzij je huis verwoest is, of tenzij je Joods bent, lukt dit meestal ook. Maar intussen zijn er geregeld geallieerde bombardementen, zijn goederen schaars, en veel vrijheden beperkt. Het nieuws in die krantenkiosk? Dat is 100% propaganda. En zie je die strepen op de lantarenpalen en bomen? Die moeten voorkomen dat je er tegenaan knalt als het donker is: ’s avonds en ’s nachts geldt verduisteringsplicht. En als het luchtalarm gaat, moet je naar de schuilplaats in de middenberm. En wat je niet ziet – maar er wel is – dat is het verzet. Veel Rotterdammers sluiten zich aan bij verzetsgroepen. Ze drukken illegale krantjes, hebben onderduikers in huis, voeren sabotage-activiteiten uit, of zelfs gewapende acties. Veel verzetsstrijders moeten dit met de dood bekopen.

5 september 1944, Dolle Dinsdag. Het zou de grootste desillusie van de oorlog zijn. De BBC meldt dat de geallieerden Nederland hebben bereikt. Ook Radio Oranje meldt het. Breda is al bevrijd! De Duitsers en NSB’ers kiezen massaal het hazenpad. Er is een machtsvacuüm, verzetsstrijders vertonen zich in het openbaar, nemen strategische posities in. Uitzinnig van vreugde gaan Rotterdammers de straat op, zoals hier op het Willebrordusplein, vlakbij de Bergweg. Rood-wit-blauwe vlaggen komen plotseling overal tevoorschijn, iedereen draagt oranje. Helaas – het bleek slechts een gerucht en retoriek. De zwaarste maanden van de oorlog moeten nog volgen, met razzia’s, keiharde terreur, vernietiging en de ontberingen van de hongerwinter.
